Chemiosmosis

synthesis of ATP

relies on concentration gradient of protons across the thylakoid membrane

energy required to pump protons in is provided by the excited electrons passing throught the ETC

concentration gradient represents potential energy

energy is harnessed by a protein-ATP synthase(located in thylakoid membrane)
ATP synthase makes protein by adding a phosphate to ADP
ATP synthase converts kinetic/mechanical energy to chemical bond energy
	multifunctional protein
		carrier
			protons across membrane
		enzyme
catalyzing the synthesis of ATP from ADP
